Custom & OEM Plastic Products: How the Process Works from Idea to Delivery

Step 1 — Concept & Design (Week 1-2): Share your idea in whatever form you have — a sketch on paper, a reference product, a competitor's listing, or a detailed CAD file. Our industrial design team will refine the concept, considering manufacturability, material selection, and cost optimization. We produce 3D renderings so you can visualize the finished product before any tooling begins. Design revisions are unlimited at this stage — it's far cheaper to change a 3D model than a steel mold.
Step 2 — Material Selection: Based on the product's intended use, we recommend the optimal plastic resin. Factors include: temperature resistance (will it be microwaved?), chemical resistance (food contact? cleaning chemicals?), impact strength (can it be dropped?), transparency requirements, and color options. We can provide material data sheets and compliance certificates for your review.
Step 3 — Mold Development (Week 3-6): Once the design is approved, mold fabrication begins. Simple single-cavity molds for low-volume runs can be completed in 2-3 weeks. Complex multi-cavity molds for high-volume production take 4-6 weeks. We use P20 pre-hardened steel for mid-run molds (100K-500K shots) and H13 hardened steel for high-volume molds (1M+ shots). Mold cost typically ranges from $2,000-$15,000 depending on complexity — and the mold belongs to you.
Step 4 — Sampling & Approval (Week 6-7): The factory produces T1 (first trial) samples from the production mold. You'll receive 10-20 sample pieces for physical evaluation — checking dimensions, surface finish, color, assembly fit, and function. If adjustments are needed, T2 samples are produced after mold corrections. Most projects require 1-2 trial rounds. We ship samples via DHL/FedEx with 3-5 day delivery worldwide.
Step 5 — Mass Production (Week 8-10): Upon sample approval, mass production begins. Modern injection molding machines run 24/7 with cycle times typically between 15-60 seconds per piece depending on size. For a 10,000-piece order with a 30-second cycle time and a 4-cavity mold, production takes approximately 21 hours of machine time. Add quality inspection, packaging, and palletizing for a total of 5-7 production days.
Step 6 — Quality Inspection: Every production run undergoes AQL 2.5 inspection per ISO 2859-1. Our QC team checks dimensions with calipers and CMMs, tests functionality (lid fit, hinge cycles, load capacity), verifies color consistency with spectrophotometers, and ensures packaging integrity. For orders above 5,000 pieces, we recommend third-party inspection which we can arrange.
Step 7 — Shipping & Logistics: We provide FOB Ningbo/Shanghai, CIF, or DDP pricing. Full container loads (FCL) offer the best per-unit shipping cost. For smaller orders, we consolidate LCL shipments weekly. Transit times: 15-25 days to Europe, 18-30 days to North America, 7-12 days to Southeast Asia. We also offer air freight for urgent orders.
